История рождения знака «Роза ветров» уходит далеко в глубину веков. Изначально это было символом навигационной звезды у мореходов. В северном полушарии такой неподвижной звездой на ночном небосклоне является Полярная звезда. По ней моряки достаточно давно научились определять широту места и приблизительно определять свое местоположение в море. Вторым ориентиром для опытных мореплавателей был ветер. Ведь многие морские ветры постоянны в определенные периоды времени года, и, зная эти закономерности, капитан корректировал свой курс и безошибочно приводил корабль из дальнего плавания в родную гавань. Так символ навигационной звезды приобрел дополнительное значение, и звездные лучи стали указывать на стороны света: север, юг, восток и запад. Знак Розы ветров, выколотый на плече, был своеобразным амулетом для моряков. Он придавал им уверенность в правильности маршрута и успешного возвращения на родную землю. Они заставили корабль Одиссея вновь удалиться от родной Итаки.
