Iron Maiden: The Rime of the ancient mariner.
Песня, написанная по одноимённой поэме средневекового английского поэта. Самая длинная у "Iron Maiden": её длительность составляет 13,5 (!) минут. Впервые была издана в 1984 году на альбоме "Powerslave". По признанию самих музыкантов, песня получилась такой длинной неожиданно для них самих. Мол, писали, писали песню, а когда попробовали её исполнить на репетиции и засекли время, то ахнули. Однако обрезать её они даже не думали, и в результате получили то, что получили.
Песня имеет сложную структуру: она состоит из трёх, а по сути, даже из четырёх частей. Сначала идёт ураганная вступительная часть. Примерно на 6-й минуте она резко обрывается и под перебор бас-гитары Брюс Дикинсон, вокалист "мейденов", читает речитатив. Затем музыка начинает ускоряться, потихоньку возвращая слушателя к первой части, которая резко обрывается после четырёх минут.
На мой взгляд, песня является своего рода минирок-оперой. В 13,5 минут музыканты "железной девы" сумели уместить целую историю. Это тот самый случай, когда песню можно слушать до бесконечности, даже несмотря на такую длительность. Ведь не зря, наверное, Брюс Дикинсон и компания включили её в сет-лист завершившегося 2 года назад тура "Somewhere back in time", в котором они исполняли свои лучшие песни?
