Ровно сто лет назад, 22 февраля 1918 года начался легендарный Ледяной поход — несколько тысяч солдат и офицеров только-только формирующейся Добровольческой армии вышли из Ростова-на-Дону, стараясь избежать окружения от подступавших со всех сторон большевицких отрядов. Из сытого, полного припасов города небольшая группка русских фанатиков вышла в страшную зимнюю степь, без особой надежды, но с одним лишь отчаянием. Как сформулировал генерал Алексеев: «Мы уходим в степи. Можем вернуться, только если будет милость Божья. Но нужно зажечь светоч, чтобы была хоть одна светлая точка среди охватившей Россию тьмы…».
В лед, тьму и неизвестность под постоянными атаками большевиков ушли менее 3000 человек — все, что на тот момент оставалось от некогда блистательной Российской Империи. Вернулось же… На пике Вооруженные Силы Юга России насчитывали 270 000 штыков и сабель (и это не считая сотен тысяч русских людей, поднявшихся на других фронтах). Ледяной поход — это не только история о русских отчаянии и отваге, но и о надежде вопреки всему, надежде, которая в конце концов оправдывается и превосходит все ожидания. Вряд ли те бредущие по ледяной степи 3000 надеялись, что станут искрой, которая зажжет пламя сопротивления по всей России, от Прибалтики до Владивостока. И тем не менее они стали этой искрой. И пусть в итоге Белая Россия проиграла, но она погибла с честью, ушла на дно, паля из всех орудий (в отличие от смешного и позорного развала СССР в 1991 году), оставаясь примером мужества и надежды даже 100 лет спустя.
Эта история нам кажется особенно важной сегодня, когда многие потеряли надежду, многие — смирились, многие — раздавлены пессимизмом и думают, что Многонациональная Федерация и ее бесчисленные полчища — это навсегда, «и что мы можем сделать, когда нас — тысячи, а их — тьмы, тьмы и тьмы».
