"Оксфорд утверждает, что score осталось от устного счёта, когда считали головы в стаде до 20 (пальцы туда-обратно), а потом делали отметку (score) на палочке.

Гросс - тоже из французского, grosse douzaine, "большая дюжина", т.е. дюжина дюжин"
