Ват Махатхат был построен в XIV веке. Но в 1767 году, во время вторжения в город бирманской армии, он был полностью разрушен, а все статуи Будды обезглавлены.
Точно определить, как голова Будды оказалась внутри дерева, сегодня невозможно. Но существует три основных версии. Согласно первой легенде, бирманцы отсекли голову от туловища статуи и закопали в землю, чтобы тайцы ходили по ней ногами. По другой, вор украл голову из заброшенного храма, но так и сумев унести ее с собой, просто бросил под деревом. И наконец, третья версия говорит о том, что тайские монахи сами решили спрятать святыню от бирманцев. Так или иначе, со временем дерево выросло, его корни оплели и постепенно подняли голову на поверхность земли.
Сегодня голова Будды в Ват Махатхате считается одной из главных святынь Таиланда. Местные жители верят, что она дарит благодать всем, кто ее увидит.
