А я ведь уже год в Москве... Я считал, что Петербург более европейский город, чем Москва, и первые месяцы постоянно находил этому подтверждения. Но теперь вынужден признать, что это не так. Москва более европейский город. Просто потому что тут гораздо больше денег. И эти деньги не только тратятся на благоустройство города, они еще и притягивают более образованных (и как следствие более либеральных) людей.
В общественных науках нет такой же точности, как в естественных. Но если уж выбирать что-то наиболее неоспоримое, что-то обладающее наибольшей предсказательной силой, то это будет экономическое развитие. Эти силы нельзя просто так взять и обмануть. Поэтому на честных выборах я никогда не проголосую за представителей нынешней оппозиции. Их популизм оторван от реальности и опасен. Того, что они с такой готовностью обещают, нельзя достичь и за десять лет семипроцентного роста. И, как бы мне ни было жалко, бессмысленно выносить на референдум закон о легализации однополых браках пока людям в стране нечего есть. Они его не одобрят :(
Вообще, это главное мое открытие за прошедший год. До этого Россия представлялась мне каким-то особенным злом, казалось, что все, кто связан с государством, — злонамеренные идиоты. Эта позиция опасна тем, что создает иллюзию того, что все легко исправить. Достаточно поменять власть и Россия превратится в развитую европейскую страну. Есть еще и противоположная, но схожая позиция: у нас не власть особенно плохая, а люди, поэтому вообще все бессмыленно. А Россия нормальная страна, наши беды не такие уж особенные, если повнимательнее посмотреть на опыт других развивающихся стран. И даже во власти достаточно способных людей, стремящихся изменить ситуацию к лучшему.
Это, конечно, не значит, что в России мало зла и невежества. Нет, зла и невежества предостаточно и нужно продолжать с ними бороться.

And, no matter how sorry I am, it makes no sense to pass the law on legalizing same-sex marriages to a referendum while people in the country have nothing to eat. They will not approve it :(
In general, this is my main discovery over the past year. Before that, Russia seemed to me to be a special evil, it seemed that everyone connected with the state was malicious idiots. This position is dangerous in that it creates the illusion that everything is easy to fix. It is enough to change the power and Russia will turn into a developed European country. There is also the opposite, but a similar position: we don’t have power especially bad, but people, therefore everything is senseless. And Russia is a normal country, our troubles are not so special, if you look more closely at the experience of other developing countries. And even in the power of quite capable people who are trying to change the situation for the better.
This, of course, does not mean that in Russia there is little evil and ignorance. No, evil and ignorance abound and it is necessary to continue to fight them.
