Нашей целью было создание узнаваемой, но при этом совершенно новой схемы, в которой были бы учтены все пожелания пассажиров и дизайнеров. В результате мы получили гибкую графическую систему, позволяющую составлять схемы разного размера и степени детализации.
Особое внимание уделено расположению станций на схеме — мы использовали мнемонические подсказки, при этом не забывая об общей равномерности впечатления. Если на одной линии или на пересадочном узле станция обозначена выше другой, значит, она в городе расположена севернее.
Сложные пересадочные узлы изображаются кольцами. Это делает их более читаемыми, а заодно рифмуется и гармонирует с кольцевой линией.
Впервые в истории московского метро все станции написаны по правилам русского языка — слова начинаются с заглавной буквы и продолжаются строчными. Ранее все буквы во всех словах на всех московских схемах набирались заглавными буквами.
Кольцевая линия в форме геометрически правильного круга — самый узнаваемый элемент и визитная карточка московской схемы метро, поэтому ее привычный вид важно беречь до тех пор, пока есть техническая возможность.
Все английские надписи покрашены одинаковым серо-голубым цветом, чтобы их было легче найти. Цвет специально выбран неяркий, а кегль шрифта уменьшен, чтобы перевод не мешал — в московском метро на тысячи русскоговорящих пассажиров приходится один иностранец.
В схеме 2013 года, кроме прочего, заложена идея усиления роли электричек в системе транспорта Москвы. Передвижение на электричках снижает нагрузку на метрополитен, при этом зачастую добираться куда-либо таким способом удобнее и быстрее.
Схема легко отвечает на вопрос о том, как добраться из любого аэропорта в город и наоборот.
Как и в первой версии, схема может существовать в любом из необходимых форматов и бесконечном количестве вариантов: с рекой и без нее, с буквой «ё» и без нее, с железнодорожными путями и без, с основными дорогами, достопримечательностями, парками, сталинскими высотками, причалами на Москве-реке и многим другим.

Our goal was to create a recognizable, but at the same time completely new scheme, which would take into account all the wishes of passengers and designers. As a result, we got a flexible graphic system that allows us to draw up schemes of different sizes and degrees of detail.
Particular attention is paid to the location of the stations in the diagram - we used mnemonic clues, while not forgetting the overall uniformity of experience. If on one line or at the interchange station the station is indicated above another, then it is located in the city to the north.
Complex interchange nodes are represented by rings. This makes them more readable, and at the same time rhymes and harmonizes with the ring line.
