Если человек не соделается сперва достойным откровения, то не может видеть оного. И если не достигнет чистоты, понятия его не могут стать просветленными, чтобы видеть ему сокровенное. И пока не освободится от всего видимого, усматриваемого в видимой твари, не освободится и от понятий о видимом и не соделается чистым от потемненных помыслов. А где тьма и спутанность помыслов, там и страсти. Если человек не освободится, как сказали мы, от сего и от причин к тому, то ум не прозрит в сокровенное. Посему Господь прежде всего повелел взяться за нестяжательность, удалиться от мирского мятежа и отрешиться от попечения, общего всем людям, сказав: всяк, иже не отречется от всего человечества и от всего своего и не отвергнется сам от себя, не может быти Мой ученик.
