Василия, мастера спорта в прошлом, были такие бицепсы, что от них топорщило рясу, вздымая ее на плечах, как надкрылья. Значит, все дело в том, что били со спины?
Вспоминают, у инока Трофима был идеальный слух, и стоило о. Ферапонту чуть-чуть ошибиться, как он поправлял: «Ферапонт, не так!» Он не мог не услышать, как упал о. Ферапонт и умолкли его колокола. Вся звонница, наконец, размером в комнатку, и постороннему человеку здесь невозможно появиться незамеченным. Но в том-то и дело, что в обитель пришел оборотень, имеющий вид своего монастырского человека. «Друг пришел, — отвечает за сына мать о. Трофима. — Он любил людей и подумал: друг».
Однажды в юности о. Василия спросили: что для него самое страшное? «Нож в спину», — ответил он. Нож в спину — это знак предательства, ибо только свой человек может подойти днем так по-дружески близко, чтобы предательски убить со спины.

Следствие установило, что о. Василий встретился лицом к лицу с убийцей, и был между ними краткий разговор, после которого о. Василий доверчиво повернулся спиной к убийце. Удар был нанесен снизу вверх — через почки к сердцу. Все внутренности были перерезаны. Но о. Василий еще стоял на ногах и, сделав несколько шагов, упал, заливая кровью молодую траву. Он жил после этого еще около часа, но жизнь уходила от него с потоками крови.
Потом у этой залитой кровью земли стояла кружком спортивная команда о. Василия, приехавшая на погребение. Огромные, двухметровые мастера спорта рыдали, как дети, комкая охапки роз. Они любили о. Василия. Когда-то он был их капитаном и вел команду к победе, а потом он привел их к Богу, став для многих духовным отцом. Горе этих сильных людей было безмерным, и не давал покоя вопрос: «Как мог этот „плюгаш“ одолеть их капитана?» И теперь на месте убийства они вели разбор последнего боя капитана: да, били в спину. Но о. Василий еще стоял на ногах. Преподобный был с топором и такой силы, что мог бы постоять за себя. «В житии преподобного Серафима Саровского говорится, — рассказывал проповедник, — что, когда он поднял топор, то вспомнил слова Господа: „Взявшие меч, мечом и погибнут“. И он отбросил топор от себя». Вот и ответ на вопрос, а мог ли о. Василий обрушить на убийцу ответный смертоносный удар? Дерзость злодеяния была на том и построена, что здесь святая земля, где даже воздух напитан любовью. И верша казнь православных монахов, палач был уверен — уж его-то здесь не убьют.
