Нам придется пересмотреть наши учреждения, законодательные нормы, регулирующие нашу жизнь, наши навыки и привычки, и реформировать общественное мнение с точки зрения подъема производительных сил страны.
В Америке о человеке судят по тому, сколько он стоит, т. е. сколько долларов он имеет. Может быть, это не совсем так, но ходячее воззрение таково... Там ценят жизненный комфорт, и бедность или недостаток средств не окружаются там почетом.
В нашем обществе сложилось другое воззрение: у нас считается жить впроголодь чуть ли не чем-то почетным; может быть, это оттого происходило, что наша интеллигенция жила при виде тяжелого экономического положения крестьянских масс и, чувствуя себя не в силах улучшить это положение, как бы стыдилась жить лучше масс населения. Эта черта свойственна слабым, пассивным натурам, которые, не чувствуя в себе достаточно силы воли, чтобы резко изменить известное положение вещей, выражают свое настроение состраданием; вот почему, быть может, в нашем обществе сложилось почти отрицательное отношение к лицам, развивающим энергию, инициативу в поднятии производительных сил страны. Правда, быть может, еще и то, что крупные заработки получались у нас нередко не в силу личной энергии, а господства деспотизма, протекционизма. У нас сложилось воззрение, что интеллигентному человеку заниматься лесным, торговым делом и т. п. не пристало, и кто много зарабатывает, того даже осуждают.
Это создавало своеобразную атмосферу: "коммерсант" у нас было почти ругательное слово, а между тем совсем не так смотрят на промышленника, купца в Соед. Штатах, Германии. Правда, и в такой оценке лиц, занимающихся торговлей или промышленностью, повинны были специфические условия нашей жизни: мы недостаточно пользовались победами ума над природой, крупные состояния нередко наживались у нас исключительно на эксплуатации труда; но в настоящее время мы все свои силы должны направить на развитие производительных сил страны при помощи данных науки, всего жизненного опыта, и мы эту деятельность должны поставить в благоприятные условия, — только тогда она в состоянии будет развиваться, идти вширь.
Общественное мнение имеет огромное значение для направления экономической жизни страны, и нам нужно пересоздать это общественное мнение, влить в него другое содержание...
Наша серьезная болезнь в том, что мы не понимаем, не чувствуем связи с целым, каждый держится у нас пословицы: "моя хата с краю, ничего не знаю" и этим руководствуется в жизни.
Оттого-то мы и относимся к нашим обязанностям халатно, мы не хотим себе ярко представить, какое пагубное значение для общественной жизни имеет отмеченная формула поведения. Куда мы ни посмотрим, везде мы видим пренебрежение обязанностями, между тем из этого вытекает огромный общественный вред для страны.
Вот почему у нас все расползается по швам, не видно той жизненной силы, которая бьет ключом в Англии и Германии...
