Сегодня отмечают: Международный день кофе (День эспрессо), День ветеранов органов внутренних дел и внутренних войск МВД России, День банана и День гармошечного зова у чудиков.
В народном календаре: Иосиф Песнопевец, Ольховые смотрины, в честь преподобного Иосифа песнописца, родившегося в 9 веке на Сицилии и ушедшего в Солунский монастырь. Подавали голос первые прилетевшие журавли, и с их прилетом время окончательно поворачивалось на лето: «Первая ласточка — еще не весна, настоящую весну приносит на крыльях журавль». Цвела ольха и её использовали для колодезных срубов, а кору собирали в целебных целях.
История решила запомнить день с помощь этих события: в 1722 Пётр I ввёл в Российской империи подать на ношение бороды в размере 50 рублей в год, в 1824 в Санкт-Петербурге между Россией и США заключён первый русско-американский договор (русско-американская конвенция), в 1881 в Петербурге на месте будущего Спаса на крови была в кратчайшие сроки возведена часовня и, спустя всего полтора месяца после покушения на Александра II, она была освящена и стали проводить памятные панихиды, в 1895 в Мариинском театре впервые выступил Ф. И. Шаляпин, в 1905 Николай II подписал указ «Об укреплении начал веротерпимости», отменявший ряд вероисповедных ограничений, в частности в отношении «раскольников», в 1912 трагические события на Ленских приисках: правительственными войсками была расстреляна демонстрация рабочих, протестовавших против тяжелых условий жизни, в 1944 завершилась битва за Правобережную Украину – Днепровско-Карпатская операция, в 1964 начало выпуска компанией Ford Motor Company автомобиля Ford Mustang, в 1968 в СССР впервые вышла в эфир телепрограмма «В мире животных», которую тогда вёл Александр Згуриди, в 1986 принято постановление ЦК КПСС «Об основных направлениях ускорения решения жилищной проблемы в стране», согласно которому каждая семья должна была иметь отдельную квартиру или дом к 2000 году, а в 2011 состоялась премьера сериала «Игра престолов».
Родились в этот день: живописец Семён Щедрин, Василий Каменский, Шон Бин, Игорь Тихомиров («Джунгли», бас-гитарист «Кино», звукорежиссёр «ДДТ»), Валерия, Анастасия Макаревич («Лицей») и Александр Минаев (тайм-Аут).
