По слухам, текст этого разговора Марком был записан чуть ли не дословно.
Легендарный гитарный рифф в начале исполнения, который продолжается на протяжении всей композиции, тоже был создан случайно: звукорежиссер Нейл Дорфман работал над расстановкой микрофонов, а Марк в это время играл на своей гитаре. Наконец, люди в аппаратной попросили Нейла остановиться в расстановке, и послушать результат записи. Достигнутое звучание всем понравилось, а расстановка оказалась "странной настолько, что никто никогда не расположил бы так микрофоны". Именно этот вариант звучания и был записан в оригинале песни "Money for Nothing".
Когда песня записывалась, на Монсеррат нелегкая принесла Стинга, который был приглашен для записи бэквокала. В результате его бэквокал ограничился фразой в песне, которая в результате стала слоганом телеканала MTV: "I Want My MTV". Из-за этой фразы лейбл Стинга замучил своего исполнителя и группу на предмет соавторства Стинга в этой песне. В результате формально у нее числится два автора.
Хотя свой положительный момент это тоже принесло. Во время концерта "Live Aid" на стадионе Уэмбли песня исполнялась вместе со Стингом, что дало группе "Dire Straits" еще один рывок в популярности. А на церемонии "Грэмми" сингл получил награду за лучшее вокальное рок-исполнение дуэтом или группой.
С клипом тоже здорово получилось. А еще мне понравилось, что текст этой песни частично запрещен для радиотрансляции из-за строчки: "Глянь на этого педика, накрашенного и с серьгами…. У этого педика есть свой самолёт, этот маленький педик — миллионер". Причем произносилась эта фраза рисованным персонажем клипа в момент трансляции по телевизору концерта группы "Dire Straits". Но цензура такая цензура!
