Геннадий Шпаликов родился 6 сентября 1937 года. С 1959 по 1964 год учился на сценарном факультете ВГИКа. Его первой серьезной работой в кино стал фильм "Застава Ильича", постановку которого на студии имени Горького осуществил режиссер Марлен Хуциев. Фильм вышел в 1962 году, однако тут же был снят с проката как "идеологически вредный". Картина не понравилась лично Н. С. Хрущеву. Когда 7-8 марта 1963 года в Кремле проходила встреча руководителей страны с деятелями советского искусства, именно этот фильм был подвергнут самой разнузданной критике. Когда все критические выпады в адрес картины были сделаны, присутствующие потребовали выйти на трибуну главных виновников случившегося: Марлена Хуциева и Геннадия Шпаликова. Первым вышел режиссер. Он говорил о том, что снимал свою картину от чистого сердца, что даже в мыслях не держал никакой антипартийности. Иначе говоря, вместо того чтобы покаяться, режиссер горячо отстаивал свое произведение, признавал отдельные ошибки и обещал сделать правильные выводы. Зал встретил это выступление гулом неодобрения.
Между тем не успел сойти с трибуны М. Хуциев, как на нее уже лихо вбежал 25-летний Шпаликов. То, что он затем сказал, привело аппаратчиков в еще больший гнев. Он заявил, что настанет время, когда кинематографисты будут пользоваться в стране такой же славой, как и герои-космонавты, что он убежден в своем праве на ошибку и просит присутствующих не судить их картину слишком строго. Много чего за долгие годы повидал кремлевский зал заседаний, но чтобы безусый юнец учил сановных руководителей жизни - такого здесь еще не бывало. Поэтому последние слова молодого оратора буквально утонули в диком реве и гвалте чиновной братии. Казалось, еще мгновение, и вся эта толпа обезумевших от гнева номенклатурщиков сорвется со своих мест и растопчет, растерзает юношу. Видимо, это почувствовал Хуциев, который вскочил со своего места, вбежал на трибуну и, пытаясь перекричать зал, произнес: "Мой коллега очень взволнован, три часа назад у него случилось радостное событие-у него родилась дочка. Не будем к нему строги..." Однако все это было гласом вопиющего в пустыне. Зал продолжал кричать, топать ногами, и казалось, что этому не будет конца...Уже 40 лет как Геннадия Федоровича Шпаликова нет в живых, он привязал полотенце к ручке двери и упал на пол так, чтобы оно туго затянулось на шее. Ему было 37 лет.
Тело Геннадия Федоровича Шпаликова первым обнаружил Григорий Горин в 1974 году на одной из дач в Переделкино,
