A newly unearthed article by the great politician reveals that he reasoned like a scientist about the likelihood of extraterrestrials, writes Mario Livio.

Исследователи обнаружили неизвестную ранее рукопись Уинстона Черчилля, в которой британский премьер рассуждает о существовании внеземной жизни. Рецензию на нее напечатал журнал Nature.
11-страничное эссе «Одни ли мы во Вселенной?» хранилось в запасниках музея Черчилля в Фултоне (штат Миссури), куда попало из частной коллекции в 80-х годах прошлого века. О рукописи ничего не было известно до мая 2016 года, когда ее случайно нашел директор музея.
Статья была написана в 1939 году, а в конце 1950-х Черчилль переписал и дополнил ее, отдав затем рукопись своему другу Эмери Ривсу.
«Мысли Черчилля во многом повторяют рассуждения современных ксенобиологов. В целом, он строит свои идеи о внеземной жизни на современном принципе Коперника — представлении о том, что Земля не уникальна и не играет особой роли в жизни Вселенной», — прокомментировал содержание рукописи астрофизик Марио Ливио.
Черчилль отталкивался от нескольких базовых идей: необъятность Вселенной, необходимость воды для зарождения жизни и понятие «обитаемой зоны», связанное с температурным фактором и наличием гравитации. В частности, он приходит к выводу, что в пределах нашей Солнечной системы жизнь могла бы существовать на Венере и Марсе.
Однако во вселенной может существовать бесчисленное множество планет, где сложились условия, благоприятные для зарождения жизни. «Я не готов поверить, что только на Земле есть живые, разумные существа», — заключает Черчилль.

Researchers have discovered a previously unknown manuscript of Winston Churchill, in which the British prime minister discusses the existence of extraterrestrial life. A review of it was published by the journal Nature.
11-page essay “Are We Alone in the Universe?” kept in the storerooms of the Churchill Museum in Fulton (Missouri), which came from a private collection in the 80s of the last century. Nothing was known about the manuscript until May 2016, when the museum director accidentally found it.
The article was written in 1939, and in the late 1950s, Churchill rewrote and supplemented it, then giving the manuscript to his friend Emery Reeves.
“Churchill’s thoughts largely repeat the arguments of modern xenobiologists. In general, he builds his ideas about extraterrestrial life on the modern principle of Copernicus - the idea that the Earth is not unique and does not play a special role in the life of the Universe, ”commented astrophysicist Mario Livio on the content of the manuscript.
Churchill was based on several basic ideas: the immensity of the Universe, the need for water for the origin of life, and the concept of a “habitable zone” associated with the temperature factor and the presence of gravity. In particular, he concludes that within our solar system, life could exist on Venus and Mars.
However, in the universe there can exist countless planets where conditions are favorable for the birth of life. “I’m not ready to believe that only on Earth are there living, intelligent beings,” Churchill concludes.
