31 августа - память Флора и Лавра, издавна почитавшихся на Руси как покровители домашних животных, особенно лошадей. В этот день отмечали конский праздник, лошадей не использовали для работы,а так же окропляли святой водой.
Их купали и кормили "в полную сыть". Совершали молебны от падежа и для приплода скота.

Мученики Флор и Лавр были родными братьями не только по плоти, но и по духу. Они жили во II веке в Византии, затем переселились в Иллирию (ныне Югославия). По ремеслу братья были камнетесами (их учителями в этом искусстве были христиане Прокл и Максим, от которых братья научились и богоугодной жизни). Правитель Иллирии Ликаон послал братьев в соседнюю область для работы над строящимся языческим храмом. Святые трудились на стройке, раздавая заработанные деньги нищим, сами же соблюдали строгий пост и непрестанно молились. Однажды сын местного жреца Мамертина неосторожно подошел к стройке, и осколок камня попал ему в глаз, сильно повредив его. Святые Флор и Лавр обнадежили разгневанного отца, что сын его получит исцеление. Они взяли юношу к себе и наставили вере во Христа. После того, как юноша исповедал Иисуса Христа Истинным Богом, братья помолились о нем, и глаз исцелел. При виде такого чуда отец юноши также уверовал во Христа. Когда постройка храма была закончена, братья собрали христиан, помогавших при постройке, сокрушили идолов и поставили в восточной части храма святой крест. Всю ночь они провели в молитве, озаряемые небесным светом. Узнав об этом, начальник области приговорил к сожжению бывшего жреца Мамертина с его сыном и 300 христиан. Мученики Флор и Лавр, отправленные к правителю Ликаону, были брошены в пустой колодец и засыпаны землей.
Через много лет святые мощи мучеников Флора и Лавра были обретены нетленными и перенесены в Константинополь. В 1200 г. их видел новгородский паломник Антоний; около 1350 г. главы мучеников в монастыре Вседержителя видел Стефан Новгородец.

They spent all night in prayer, illuminated by heavenly light. Upon learning of this, the head of the region sentenced the former priest Mamertin with his son and 300 Christians to be burned.
