Конечно, это не Дель Торо, но это ДеНайт, поэтому есть чувство, что оно в принципе в надёжных руках.
Фильм явно рассчитан на куда более широкую и более жаждущую зрелищ аудиторию. По этой причине тема единения ради общего дела, которая так вдохновляла и двигала первый фильм, убрана с горизонта. Дети, которые берут спасение мира в свои руки и из хлама собирают себе роботов - как нельзя вовремя (для тех, кто смотрел трансляцию March for Our lives и следил за акцией школьников Walk Out), плюс удачно продолжают тему миллениалов из первого фильма.
Главная героиня на удивление не выскочка и не особенная снежинка, не загораживает собой всех прочих персонажей только на основе того, что она девочка (смотрю на вас, Звездные войны). У неё нет романтической линии, нет мотива Избранной™️, хотя в первые минуты ее экранного времени можно подумать, что она новая Рей или Кэтнисс (и далее по списку). Ее предыстория перекликается с Мако Мори, только никакой Пентекост в сияющих доспехах не пришёл на помощь, и это формирует наверное более актуальный - или просто другой - образ ребёнка, оставшегося сиротой из-за войны.
Ее коллеги-дети пусть и несколько повторяют характеры пилотов из первой части, но неплохо держат на себе функции мультинациональной команды (и, пожалуй, только в это читается отголосок месседжа первой части).
Персонаж Бойеги симпатичный, с очень понятными задвигами и положенными daddy issues. Между мэнпэйном и дэдди ишьюз я выбираю последнее, потому что хотя бы оно обосновано. Конечно, ему не хватает холодного очарования Идриса Эльбы, но он динамичный, приятный на вид и хочется встретить его в следующем фильме.
Нэйт а.к.а иствуд-младший скорее смазливый симпатяжка, чем прямо вот необходимый персонаж, но его динамика с Бойегой приятна, заставляет погрустить о Райли и Янси из первого фильма.
Герман Готтблиб порадовал больше всех, и под порадовал я имею ввиду совершенно детский восторг, потому что развитие его персонажа - это самое правильное, что можно было придумать.
Ньют одновременно и удивил, и не удивил. Следовало ожидать!
Льюэнь Шао получает отдельный кудос за обманчивый представительский образ азиатского корпоративного зла. Пожалуй, это была самая приятная деконструкции шаблона в кино за последнее время.
Дизайн Кайдзю и Егерей остаётся на уровне с небольшим добавлением воображения согласно сюжету.
Резюме таково, что фильм можно воспринимать как фанфик внутри сложившейся вселенной, приятные ОС и послевкусие. Хочется посмотреть еще разок, и с должным уровнем интереса ждать следующую часть.

The main character is surprisingly not an upstart and not a special snowflake; she does not block all the other characters with herself only on the basis that she is a girl (I look at you, Star Wars). She doesn’t have a romantic line, she doesn’t have a Chosen ™ мотива motive, although in the first minutes of her screen time you might think that she is a new Ray or Katniss (and further down the list). Her background resonates with Mako Mori, only no Pentecost in shining armor came to the rescue, and this forms probably a more relevant - or just different - image of a child left an orphan due to war.
Her fellow children, albeit somewhat repeating the characters of the pilots from the first part, but not badly bear the functions of a multinational team (and, perhaps, only this reads the echo of the message of the first part).
Boyegi's character is cute, with very clear gates and posed daddy issues. Between the manpain and the deaddy ishes, I choose the latter, because at least it is justified. Of course, he lacks the cold charm of Idris Elba, but he is dynamic, pleasant-looking and wants to meet him in the next film.
Nate a.k.a. Eastwood Jr. is rather a pretty little girl than a character right here, but his dynamics with Boyega are pleasant and make you saddened about Riley and Yancy from the first film.
Herman Gottblib pleased most of all, and by pleased I mean absolutely childish delight, because the development of his character is the most correct thing that you could think of.
Newt was both surprised and not surprised. To be expected!
Lewen Shao receives a separate kudos for his deceptive representative image of Asian corporate evil. Perhaps this was the most pleasant deconstruction of the template in the movie in recent times.
The design of Kaiju and the Huntsman remains at the level with a little added imagination according to the plot.
The summary is that the film can be perceived as fanfiction within the existing universe, pleasant OS and aftertaste. I would like to see one more time, and with the due level of interest, wait for the next part.
