С некоторых пор я облюбовала серию «Эксклюзивная классика» издательства АСТ. Прихожу в Буквоед и полчаса ковыряюсь в стеллажах «3 по цене 2». Выбираю по двум принципам: названия должны быть на слуху, а книги – максимально непохожими друг на друга. Так этим летом у меня поселились «Заводной апельсин», «Возвращение в Брайдсхед» и «Чума». Первое наверное будет правильно назвать антиутопией. Послевкусие пренеприятнейшее. Не хочу такой мир, даже на страницах книги. Второе проглотила за один день от безысходности. Так нельзя, придётся однажды перечитать. Третье – Камю. Что такое Камю для обывателя, который давно забыл школьную программу? Философ какой-то? Тяжеловесный небось! Но надо, да! Фундаментальная вещь, говорят!
Повествование ведётся от лица свидетеля эпидемии чумы. Человек этот сразу предупреждает нас, что будет придерживаться исключительно фактов. И правда, всё происходящее преподносится с удивительной беспристрастностью: улицы в окровавленных трупиках крыс, страстные речи проповедника перед напуганной паствой, первые жертвы. Это ещё не протокол, но уже не оценка. Ком в горле, которому там и место, когда речь идёт о подобной катастрофе, обнаруживается только трижды. Две смерти из сотни упомянутых заставляют автора забыть об обещанной непредвзятости. И одна заключительная мысль, которой вам стоит дождаться.
Заслуга ли автора в том, что мне было не страшно читать о страшных бубонах? Или дело в хитросплетениях человеческой психики, которая превращает всё чудовищное в фантастику для нашего же спокойствия?
Как бы то ни было, читатель рано или поздно понимает, что «Чума» – это больше, чем хроника одного события. Это портрет любой катастрофы, в которой одному суждено погибнуть, другому сдаться, третьему предать, а кому-то бороться, не зная, что ждёт впереди. Но он «решил написать эту историю <…>, чтобы сказать о том, чему учит тебя година бедствий: есть больше оснований восхищаться людьми, чем презирать их».
