Появление красного яйца в христианском обряде связано с преданием: Мария Магдалина, исцеленная Господом от злых духов, первая увидела воскресшего Спасителя. Эту радостную весть и учение Господа она пошла нести по миру. Однажды пришла она в Рим во дворец к императору Тиберию. По обычаю, приходя к императору, люди должны были принести какой-нибудь подарок. Богатые приносили дорогие дары, а бедные - что могли. У Марии Магдалины, когда-то богатой и знатной, теперь ничего не было, и она принесла во дворец одно яичко, протянув его Тиберию со словами: "Христос воскрес". Не поверил император этой вести и сказал: "Как может кто-нибудь воскреснуть из мертвых?! В это трудно поверить, как и в то, что это белое яйцо может стать красным". И пока он говорил, цвет яйца в руках Марии постепенно стал меняться, и, наконец, оно оказалось ярко-красным. С тех пор, говорит легенда, у христиан появился обычай дарить друг другу на Светлой Неделе крашеные яйца с радостным возгласом "Христос воскрес!" и троекратным целованием.
