Первоначально «маргинал» — рисунки и орнаменты, украшающие поля средневековой иллюстрированной рукописи.
Однако, иногда надписи резко выбивались из общей концепции книги. Наглядный пример - «Апокалипсис» с роскошно выполненными сценами конца света, а на полях надпись переписчика: «как болят пальцы от холода» или «когда я наконец закончу эту главу».
В данном смысле термин «маргинал» как «что-то лишнее, выбивающееся из общего русла» и перекочевал в социологию.

A vivid example is the “Apocalypse” with luxuriously executed scenes of the end of the world, and on the margins there is an inscription of the scribe: “how fingers hurt from the cold” or “when I finally finish this chapter”.
In this sense, the term “marginal” as “something superfluous, straying from the general channel” and migrated to sociology.
