Скорби и лишения не столько разят, сколько напраслины и нападки злых людей. У врага они суть самые сильные оружия к возмущению живущих в духе. К ним он приступает обычно с этим оружием, когда увидит, что они не поддаются уже ни в чем пожеланиям похоти. Видя, что этим путем нельзя их взять, он направляет против них злых людей, чтоб, если ушел кто от похоти, задержать его гневом и ненавистию к обидчикам и чрез то отнять у него содеваемое им спасение: ибо гневаяйся на брата повинен геенне (см.: Мф. 5:22). Против этих козней благодать Божия воздвигает в сердце необоримую стену – долготерпение, которым отражаются все стрелы лукавого. Долготерпение все стоит на том убеждении, что напраслины и нападки от других суть не их дело, а дело врага; потому оно не на людей восстает гневом, а на врага вооружается неприязнию, храня к людям доброе расположение. Этим долготерпение перехитряет врага. Почему о нем говорит Премудрый: долготерпелив муж мног в разуме: малодушный же крепко безумен (ср.: Притч. 14:29).

Sorrows and hardships are not so much smashed as slander and attacks of evil people. At the enemy, they are the most powerful weapons to the indignation of those living in the spirit. He usually starts with them with these weapons when he sees that they no longer give in to the wishes of lust. Seeing that it is impossible to take them this way, he directs evil people against them, so that if someone has left lust, to detain him with anger and hatred for the offenders and thereby take away his salvation: for being angry with your brother is guilty of hell (see : Matthew 5:22). Against these intrigues, the grace of God erects an irresistible wall in the heart - patience, which reflects all the arrows of the evil one. Patience is all based on the conviction that vain attacks and attacks from others are not their business, but that of the enemy; therefore, it does not revolt against people with anger, but dislikes itself at the enemy, keeping a good disposition towards people. With this, patience outsmarts the enemy. Why does the Wise speak of him: long-suffering husband is much in the mind: the faint-hearted is very madly (cf. Proverbs 14:29).
