Примерно 3500 лет тому назад, в результате вулканического взрыва образовался в Эгейском море чудесный архипелаг из пяти островов — Санторини. Такое же название носит и главный остров. Название это слышали многие, даже те, кто Грецией совсем не интересуется. Всё просто: отдых на островах Санторини не забывается, любой человек, побывавший здесь, увезет с собой самые теплые воспоминания о пейзажах, морских видах, ласковом солнце и теплом чистом море. Санторини (Thira) вулканический остров - туристическая жемчужина Греции в Эгейском море. Где Вы еще увидите разноцветные пляжи - красного, белого и черного цвета? Тира окутала пеной ажурных белых домов с голубым орнаментом - синие купола крыш казались продолжением моря. И в эту палитру словно неведомый художник подмешал розовый камень мостовых. Пространство утратило свои границы. Как ласточкины гнезда лепятся дома по отвесным терраскам, образованным вулканической породой. А некоторые жилища, начианясь под небом, уходят вглубь горы. И двери... Эти санторинские врата, ведущие, кажется, прямо в море. Откроешь - ступени ведут вниз, к терраске дома, которая расположена прямо на крыше другого. Эти двери, распахнутые в синеву, были излюбленным образом Сальвадора Дали.
В июньском номере журнала «Lloyd's Cruise International» по традиции был опубликован список крупнейших круизных портов Европы 2000 года. Как утверждают авторы публикации, они располагали сведениями о пассажирских перевозках в портах за 5 месяцев и прогнозами самих портов на срок до конца года. Обогнав многих конкурентов, на седьмое место в десятку крупнейших попал остров Санторин из группы Кикладских островов (Греция). На этом скалистом острове и порта почти нет. Все суда вынуждены останавливаться на рейде, туристы добираются до берега на катерах. Но сочетание восхитительного пейзажа с вулканом и живописнейших гор с белоснежными зданиями, лепящимися по скалам, памятники одной из древнейших на Земле кикладской цивилизации и пляжи с черным вулканическим песком влекут сюда туристов и заставляют туроператоров раз за разом включать остров в маршруты круизных судов по Средиземному морю. Порт Фира стал обязательным пунктом остановки любого круиза по восточному Средиземноморью.
