В основе Лувра лежит замок-крепость — Большая башня Лувра, — возведённая королём Филлипом-Августом в 1190 годув Одним из главных предназначений замка было наблюдение низовий Сены одного из традиционных путей вторжений и набегов эпохи викингов. В 1317 году после передачи имущества Тамплиеров Мальтийскому ордену королевская казна переносится в Лувр. Карл V делает из замка королевскую резиденцию.

At the heart of the Louvre is the castle-fortress - the Big Tower of the Louvre, erected by King Phillip-Augustus in 1190. One of the main purposes of the castle was to observe the lower reaches of the Seine one of the traditional ways of invasions and raids of the Viking era. In 1317, after the transfer of the property of the Templars to the Order of Malta, the royal treasury was transferred to the Louvre. Charles V makes the castle royal residence.
