Lourie was appointed "as peoples commissar for music" in revolutionary Russia and went to Berlin in 1922. Then he lived in Paris for 15 years. Between 1913 and 1917, he committed to increasingly futuristic ideals towards atonality, and he was strongly influenced by Stravinsky's style of the composition during the years he spent in Paris.
