Arnold Bax ‒ In a Vodka Shop Sir...

Arnold Bax ‒ In a Vodka Shop
Sir Arnold Edward Trevor Bax, KCVO (1883 -1953) was an English composer, poet, and author.
In 1919 Bax revisited the piece, arranging it (along with Gopak and May Night in Ukraine) for the orchestra to serve as an interlude during the 1919 season of Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Ballet.

"The paradox is that Bax's methods, his idiom, and tonal atmosphere are impersonal: that is to say, there is no direct unfolding of an individual state of mind or soul as we find in Elgar or Gustav Mahler. Yet there is no mistaking the Bax physiognomy or psychology: always through the gloom and thickets of the symphonies the warm rays of an approachable, lovable man and nature may be felt." (Neville Cardus)
