John Dowland, Galliard in C Minor, P. 28 (on a galliard by Daniel Bacheler)
John Dowland (1563 - 1626) was the most influential English Renaissance composer, lutenist, and singer. Some pieces present examples of innovations and variety of forms unmatched by his contemporaries. Dowland's favorite form the Galliard. He also composed almans, jigs, corantos, and popular tunes. He also composed seven superb contrapuntal fantasias and two of them - "Forlorne Hope" and "Farewell" are exceptional and based on a six-note chromatic figure.
