A blast from the past: Aphelion & Shunned House have recently announced the release of NIDHOGG s/t 12". 20 years ago the guy behind this one-man project gained a certain reputation within underground circles due to his frequent collaborations with Vidar Vaaer aka ILDJARN. Together they recorded several metal and ambient releases under moniker ILDJARN-NIDHOGG and were also the founding members of short-lived combo SORT VOKTER. Not unlike his misanthropic mate, Nidhogg has distanced himself from burgeoning black metal scene and had been keeping low profile since late 90s (if not earlier). There even were some rumours that Nidhogg was nothing but Vaaer's own alter ego. Situation changed soon after the release of ILDJARN / HATE FOREST split (2013). Suddenly Nidhogg stepped out of shadows and proved that the whole ILDJARN side consists of unreleased NIDHOGG sketches rerecorded and released without any permission. Coincidence or not but at the same time he also decided to complete and release his other unreleased songs. The abovementioned EP was recorded back in 1994 with the help of session bass and guitar players. Not a real contender to the second wave classics, this release with its timelessly raw Norse feeling seems to be a sincere tribute to those glorious days. Definitely worth listening and (probably) buying.
