"в 2003 году я был в Аргентине с ретроспективой своих картин, и в свободное время поехал по бездорожью, без карты, куда, как говорится, «глаза глядят». Ехал по проселочным дорогам, деревням, и в один прекрасный день уперся в совсем безлюдное место, и сразу же там увидел человека с удочкой в руках, стоящего на горизонте. Заметил, что леска этого мужчины, под боковым солнцем, шла прямо вниз, причем очень точно шла... Мне захотелось мысленно продлить эту леску... и когда я это сделал, то подумал: «А что там, дальше, на той стороне?»
- Неужели начали проверять?
– Когда вернулся в столицу Аргентины, и купил атлас, то оказалось, что это безлюдное-безлюдное место «падает» на самый шумный город мира — Шанхай. А мой сын – китаист, и я попросил его выяснить — что находится именно в той точке Шанхая, которая совпадает с местом, где аргентинский рыбак забросил удочку. Сын сообщил мне, что напротив рыбака, в центре Шанхая, стоит женщина, которая продает рыбу. История меня подвигла на создание фильма, хотя одной этой истории было недостаточно для большого фильма. Тогда я стал изучать вопрос — где наша земля имеет две стороны? Оказалось, что таких мест в мире очень мало. Причина этого в том, что большая часть Земли покрыта водой, и, в частности, под Москвой – океан, и под Петербургом – тоже океан. В России есть только одно место, где под землей находится другая земля — это район озера Байкал.
- Под деревушкой в Аргентине — центр Шанхая, а что под озером Байкал?
- Если мысленно проткнуть насквозь землю под озером Байкал, то можно попасть в самый конец Южной Америки, точнее, на мыс Горн. Между прочим, и Байкал и мыс Горн — самые красивые места на Земле".
