Третья серия дорожных заметок про Америку. Материала про Нью-Йорк набралось много, в одну заметку все не поместилось.
Западное побережье и особенно Сан-Франциско оказались интересным, но все же если выбрать одно место, которое я стремился увидеть в Америке сильнее всего, то это, конечно, был Нью-Йорк. Так сложилось, что этот город выпал на конец путешествия и я улетал из него домой. Нью-Йорк вряд ли может оставить кого-то равнодушным. Не оставил он равнодушным и меня, хотя все случилось не так, как я себе представлял.
Мы прилетели в Нью-Йорк вечером, уже почти стемнело. Было пасмурно и моросило, все чем-то определенно напоминало Петербург. Помню, что сказал ребятам, что место у выхода из терминала чем-то похож на такое же место в Пулково, где таксисты встречают клиентов.
Жили мы через Airbnb не в самом Нью-Йорке, а в Нью-Джерси: другой город и даже штат, но находится прямо за рекой. В самом Нью-Йорке отельное лобби борется с этим сервисом (и даже смогло что-то, вроде краткосрочной аренды, там запретить), ну а Нью-Джерси, который находится в часе-полутора езды от Манхэттена, очень от этого выигрывает.
Мы жили в прекрасных многоуровневых (кажется, аж пятиэтажных, если с подвалом) апартаментах, и, собравшись вечером по приезду в гостиной, посмотрели “Игру” со Майклом Дугласом и, кажется, впервые почувствовали себя уютно и по-домашнему в месте, где остановились. Утром следующего дня мы отправились гулять по городу.
Нью-Йорк - город, мягко говоря, немаленький. Он состоит из пяти боро (borough): Манхэттен, Бруклин, Бронкс, Квинс и Стейтен-Айленд. Самый известный, конечно, Манхэттен, и часто туристы, которые приехали на небольшой срок только в нем и проводят время - ну может еще прогуливаются в/из Бруклина по одноименному мосту и плавают по Гудзону к Статуе Свободы. Помимо этого, Манхэттен еще и самый маленький - и, с своей любовью с разным рода картам, решил оценить, что есть маленький в Нью-Йорке относительно привычных масштабов. Если разместить Манхэттен на карте Петербурга, то если совместить южную оконечность с южной оконечностью Васильевского острова (там где Балтийский завод), то северная будет немного выступать за Мега Парнас. При это он относительно узкий, но это, повторюсь, самый маленький из боро.
Может быть, первое, что хотелось ощутить в Нью-Йорке: как это оказаться в городе настоящих небоскребов. Поначалу впечатление довольно сильное, хотя и к этому постепенно привыкаешь. Небоскребов много, и ты чувствуешь крохотным рядом с ними, хотя почему-то, несмотря на несравнимые размеры, церковь Олависте (причем каждый раз, когда я оказываюсь рядом с ней) или собор Святого Петра в Ватикане (и центр Рима вообще) производит куда более величественное (и даже желание преклонить колени) впечатление. Видимо, не всегда (только) размер имеет значение, небоскрёбы все-таки, в отличие от религиозных зданий, утилитарные сооружения.
Не все небоскребы красивы или даже интересны. Многие довольно однообразны и безлики. Мой любимый небоскреб в Нью-Йорке, и единственный, который вспоминается, небоскреб - это Chrysler Building. Удивительный шпиль в стиле арт-деко выделяется на панораме Нью-Йорке и притягивает взор к себе.
Игра в “размер имеет значение” не обошла и этот небоскреб. Тогда в Нью-Йорке параллельно строились Trump Building и Chrysler Building, и первый по плану был выше по высоте на два фута. Архитектор последнего не желал смириться с поражением и, не афишируя это, получил разрешение от города о установке шпиля на небоскребе. Как раз благодаря этому шпилю, тайно собранному внутри здания, Chrysler Building и стал самым высоким зданием в мире. Впрочем, меньше через год первенство (надолго) перешло к знаменитому Empire State Building.

We lived through Airbnb not in New York itself, but in New Jersey: another city and even a state, but located right across the river. In New York itself, the hotel lobby is struggling with this service (and even managed something, like a short-term lease, there is forbidden), but New Jersey, which is an hour and a half drive from Manhattan, benefits greatly from this.
We lived in beautiful multi-level (it seems as much as five-story, if with a basement) apartment, and, having gathered in the evening upon arrival in the living room, we watched “The Game” with Michael Douglas and, it seems, for the first time, we felt comfortable and at home in the place where we stayed . The next morning we went for a walk around the city.
New York is a city, to put it mildly, rather big. It consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. The most famous, of course, is Manhattan, and often tourists who have come for a short time only in it and spend time - well, they can still walk to / from Brooklyn on the same bridge and swim along the Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty. In addition, Manhattan is also the smallest - and, with his love with various kinds of maps, decided to estimate that there is a small one in New York with respect to the usual scale. If you place Manhattan on the map of St. Petersburg, then if you combine the southern tip with the southern tip of Vasilyevsky Island (where there is the Baltic Shipyard), then the northern one will be slightly behind Mega Parnas. At the same time, it is relatively narrow, but this, I repeat, is the smallest boro.
Maybe the first thing I wanted to feel in New York: how is it to be in the city of these skyscrapers. At first, the impression is quite strong, although you gradually get used to it. There are many skyscrapers, and you feel tiny next to them, although for some reason, despite the incomparable size, the Olavista church (and every time I find myself next to it) or St. Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican (and the center of Rome in general) produces much more majestic (and even the desire to kneel) impression. Apparently, not always (only) size matters, skyscrapers are, in contrast to religious buildings, utilitarian structures.
Not all skyscrapers are beautiful or even interesting. Many are pretty monotonous and faceless. My favorite skyscraper in New York, and the only one that remembers the skyscraper is the Chrysler Building. An amazing art deco style spire stands out in the panorama of New York and attracts the eye.
The game of “size does matter” has not bypassed this skyscraper. Then in New York, the Trump Building and the Chrysler Building were being built in parallel, and the first was planned to be two feet higher. The architect of the latter did not want to put up with defeat and, without advertising it, received permission from the city to install a spire in a skyscraper. Thanks to this spire, which was secretly assembled inside the building, the Chrysler Building became the tallest building in the world. However, less than a year later the championship (for a long time) passed to the famous Empire State Building.
