American IV: The Man Comes Around is Johnny Cash's 87th studio album, released in 2002. The fourth album in the American Recordings series, named after the record label of the same name.
The album is almost entirely devoted to covers, which the musician, unfortunately, could no longer record on his own. Supported vocals by Nick Cave, Fiona Apple and Don Henley, and guitar by John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Johnny received a Grammy for Best Male Country Performance for Give My Love To Rose and a Grammy for Best Short Music Video for the video for the song Hurt. "Hurt" author Trent Reznor thought Cash's idea to cover this song at first seemed useless, even though he was flattered by the attention of such a legendary musician. However, upon hearing the finished version of Cash, Reznor was deeply moved by it and admitted that Johnny's "Hurt" surpassed his own in beauty and significance. Other songs include "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode and "In My Life" by The Beatles. American IV became Cash's first album in the past thirty years (not counting the greatest hits), which received the status of "gold", and then - "platinum" by the RIAA system (April 24 and November 21, respectively). The album is the last lifetime work of Johnny Cash, who died on September 12, 2003 from diabetes. The musician left behind his legacy two more albums of the American Recordings series.
