ИCПОВЕДЬ АНГЛИЙСКОГО ПРОТЕСТАНТА, ПРИНЯВШЕГО ПРАВОСЛАВИЕ
В один из дней речь зашла об Откровении Иоанна Богослова. Присутствующие выражали свои мнения по поводу учения святого апостола о конце света, и последним взял слово наш священник. И вот что он сказал: «Мне кажется, мы уже вступаем в заключительную фазу перед пришествием последних времен. В Англии и вообще в Европе это особенно заметно: политкорректность, толерантность не по разуму, свобода нравов – всё это разъедает нас, как будто готовится почва для прихода антихриста. А главное – бездуховность и умирание христианства. Если так пойдет, то, когда Сын Божий придет на землю, едва ли Он найдет на ней веру, по крайней мере в Европе, в той самой Европе, которой суждено быть оплотом учения Христова. Я много думал над этим и пришел к выводу, что единственной страной, которая сможет противостоять антихристу в последние времена, является Россия. Именно ей уготовано собрать и сохранить малое стадо Христово. Сейчас мы думаем, что после перестройки и развала СССР Россия начнет развиваться по западной модели. Нет, не ее это путь. Ей надо восстановить Церковь, сохранить Христа и противостоять антихристу, когда он придет. Америка и Европа будут всячески давить на Россию, экономически и политически отмежевываться от неё. Но Россия выстоит, народ сплотится вокруг того, кто будет понимать задачи этой могучей державы и кого Бог пошлет для мудрого управления страной; Церковь поднимется, и враг не сможет покорить несгибаемый русский народ».
Пока священник говорил, – продолжал Джон, – я думал о том, что знаю о вашей стране. Судя по заметкам в газетах, там полный развал, страна вот-вот распадется на отдельные территории, народ бедствует и постепенно спивается. Неужели выстоят, победят, сумеют противостоять натиску? И я спросил об этом нашего священника.
«Божественная воля неизменна, и пути человеческие неисповедимы, – ответил он, – другого выхода я просто не вижу. Потребуется время, но думаю, отпущено его не так уж много. Осталось завершить просвещение мира Евангелием, а всё остальное уже при дверях (ср. Мк. 13, 29)». – «Самая большая страна по населению – Китай – не знает учения Христова», – возразил настоятелю один из прихожан. «Господь создаст условия для быстрого развития Китая, в которых естественным станет его открытость, в том числе и религиозная, – ответил священник. – Мне скоро умирать, и с некоторых пор я как бы подвожу итог своей жизни, – продолжил он. – Жалею об одном, что в своё время не перешел в Православие: именно оно сохранило в полноте учение Спасителя, продолжило путь апостолов и ранних отцов Церкви. Часто ездил в Грецию, читал книги о Православии, но так и не решился, видимо, в силу консервативности своего священства. Но тем, кто еще может что-то менять в своей жизни, мой совет: переходите в Православие, не бойтесь – в этом нет никакой измены. В Греции мне говорили, что в наших таинствах нет благодати, есть лишь набор слов и механическое повторение литургических приемов. Нет духа. И сейчас я понимаю, что, скорее всего, это так. – Священник закончил говорить, и мы стали собирать и мыть посуду, потихоньку расходиться: было над чем подумать.
Дома я места себе не находил, мысленно возвращаясь к словам настоятеля. Думал о прошлом, о своих ощущениях, и не находил ответа на вопрос, что делать. Решил: время всё расставит на свои места.
Отец-настоятель с того памятного разговора больше на службе не появлялся. Вскоре он лег в больницу, в которой и умер. Хоронили его хмурым октябрьским утром на маленьком кладбище, что начиналось сразу за храмом. Я шел за гробом и думал, как жить дальше: привычная среда обитания уходила из-под ног.

But Russia will withstand, the people will rally around someone who will understand the tasks of this mighty power and whom God will send to wisely govern the country; The Church will rise, and the enemy will not be able to subdue the unyielding Russian people.
