Отец Рафаил был исключительнейший проповедник Царствия Небесного. Хотя в храме, скажем честно, и мы помним, он двух слов связать не мог. Выходит, что-то пробурчит: «Братья, сестры, поздравляю вас, до свидания. Попьем чайку, расходимся, всё». Но проповедь самой его жизнью была настолько сильной, настолько неотразимой и, по-видимому, настолько угодной Богу, что сотни, если не тысячи людей приводились им к вере и навсегда утверждались в ней. Никогда не бывало, что бы кто-то приехал к нему, и он не нашел времени для такого человека. Даже если перед этим он несколько дней в своей порховской лачуге или в деревенском домике в Лосицах принимал людей, общался с ними дни и ночи напролет, укреплял их, утешал.
Мы порой забываем, что такое настоящее утешение. Это не какое-то богословское прикрытие, благочестивое отвлечение от нашей суровой и зачастую трагической действительности, не психотерапия. Истинное утешение пастыря – это когда священник дает человеку силы от Бога. Силы победить вызовы и трагедии этого мира, преодолеть трудности, победить самого себя. Такой истинный пастырь-утешитель утверждает в вере и Божией правде, в несокрушимом уповании на Господа. Это и было в отце Рафаиле самым главным. Это и был его выдающийся духовный талант. Именно такие силы давал людям и его учитель и духовник, старец архимандрит Иоанн (Крестьянкин).
