В центральной Швеции, рядом с родиной шведских спичек и одной из солисток «ABBA» Йёнчёпингом, есть маленький старинный городок. С одной стороны – берег озера, с другой – гребень холма; когда погода портится, холм скрывается в облаках и на узкую полоску земли обрушивается бесконечный дождь, а ветер дует такой, что у моей палатки сломало дугу. Потом выходит солнце и от земли идёт пар.
В этом городке родился организатор шведской экспедиции по покорению Северного полюса, неудачной, конечно. Начиналось всё так же, как у Седова: «Кому, как не шведам, привыкшим к северному климату, быть покорителями Арктики!» Народ охватил патриотический угар, деньги на самый передовой на то время хай-тек – наполненный водородом воздушный шар – собирали всем миром, даже король поучаствовал в финансировании экспедиции. Лететь должны были втроём, с собой везли золотые монеты для папуасов, с которыми предстояло встретиться, перелетев Северный полюс, и парадную одежду для приёмов у туземных вельмож. Заготовлены были заявления для прессы на разных языках в зависимости от того, куда получится прилететь – в Канаду или в Россию. Спокойно взлетели, сразу же на старте потеряли все средства управления шаром, решили лететь всё равно, в итоге шар упал на лёд где-то в Арктике. Сфотографировались на камеру, взятую для аэрофотосъёмки, и потихоньку пошли домой. Шли долго, потом дрейфовали на льдине, присутствия духа не теряли и, в общем-то, выбрались. Выбрались и быстро, по неустановленным причинам, умерли. Экспедиция Седова отправится в путь через 15 лет, и ещё 25 лет нужно будет подождать до первого перелёта через полюс и первой дрейфующей полярной станции.
В отличие от Седова шведы были не из низов, поэтому необходимости жениться на дочери генерала и делать подарок представителю правящей династии к юбилейной дате у них не было. Подвиг не требовался. Полетели просто так – хорошо, что втроём, и что обошлось без пароходов, гнилой солонины и ездовых собак. И даже почти выбрались, чуть-чуть не дотянули до большой земли. Нашли их лет через тридцать. В Грённе есть отличный полярный музей, посвящённый этой экспедиции, а ещё там классный кемпинг, много карамели и вкусный шведский стол в ресторане Valvet. Если подняться на гребень холма, виден как на ладони остров Визингсё и другой берег озера Веттерн.
