Мне хочется этот текст разобрать на цитаты, настолько он отвечает моим внутренним ощущениям:
Серьёзная религиозность — враг всяческого автоматизма, она крайне рефлексивна. Причём это рефлексия не над своим состоянием в стиле «ах, здесь колет, там стрельнуло», а серьёзные вопросы: куда я иду? что я для этого делаю? что из этого получается?
Христианин знает, что его оценивает Бог, а Бога невозможно обмануть. Сама ситуация, когда на тебя постоянно смотрит с небес любящий, но строгий взгляд всеведущего Отца, Сына и Святого Духа, когда ничего невозможно спрятать, исключает намеренный самообман. Да, это может быть травматично, а чревато и вовсе отчаянием. Но есть и полезная сторона этого навыка: человек с опытом серьёзной религиозности хорошо различает, когда начинает врать самому себе и искать оправданий, и умеет пресекать эти попытки.
Религия учит смирению. Не мантре «я хуже всех, я хуже всех, я хуже всех» — это мантра техническая, она не более соответствует действительности, чем изображение Бога в виде дедушки на облаке: иногда полезно, но сути не выражает. Религия учит настоящему смирению, тому самому, о котором говорят в мотивирующих речах Джобсы и Гейтсы. Учит тому, что миру (но не Богу) на тебя плевать, что ты не пуп земли, и тебе будет трудно (от слова труд), и это неизбежно, и иногда придётся есть горький хлеб поражений и неудач. Мир управляется Тем, Чьи пути неисповедимы и Кто не рассказывает тебе о своих планах, а просто делает, что хочет. Его не понять, Ему стоит просто довериться — а значит, работать изо всех сил, дабы не посрамить врученной миссии.
Религия учит, что все люди одинаковы. Что нет смысла робеть перед кем-то и мечтать войти в какое-то «высшее общество», переживать о чьём-то невнимании и так далее. Все — грешники. Все — смертны. Всех будет судить один Бог, который всех любит. Никто не лучше другого. Я не лучше никого, но никто и не лучше меня. И поэтому всякому должно воздавать честь, как тому, за кого Христос умер.
И хотя мы все многократно слышали о том, что религия полна лицемерия, что она ограничивает свободу людей и мешает счастью, — я не видел, чтобы те, кто с ней порвал, сплошь представляли собой людей свободных, счастливых и честных. А я знаю множество «ушедших». В большинстве случаев они меняют разве что бытовые привычки, не более того.
Да, логично здесь задать вопрос: отчего же верующие не таковы — не всегда честны, не осознанны, неблагодарны и склонны порою терять надежду. И ответ будет вполне обычен. Прежде всего, люди слабы. Многие ли посетители спортивных залов действительно посещают их регулярно? Всегда ли люди науки действуют разумно или всегда ли храбры и дисциплинированны те, кто носит погоны? А верить в Бога куда сложнее и труднее, чем качаться на тренажёрах, и точно не проще, чем заниматься научными исследованиями или служить в армии.
