Записки о #FAB11. День четвертый. Симпозиум (http://www.fab11.org/how-to-make-symposium/).
На начало симпозиума мы опоздали, т.к. не отпускали дела петербургские и немного ошиблись в навигации, приехав не туда, куда нужно.
Итого - мы пропустили первую сессию “How To Make Design”, зато успели на сессии:
* “How To Make Business”;
* “How To Make Tools”;
* “How To Make Research”;
* “How To Make Community”;
* “How to Make Education”.
Запомнились рассказы про создание своего бизнеса от co-founder'a FormLab Maxim Lobovsky (SLA 3D-принтер) и руководителя littleBits Ayah Bdeir. Если с принтером всё примерно понятно (разрабатывать его начали еще до бума домашних FDM-принтеров), то на littleBits стоит обратить отдельное внимание, заглянув на их сайт (littlebits.cc) и, возможно, приняв участие в их конкурсе (http://littlebits.cc/fab11). LittleBits - это конструктор из магнитящихся друг к другу модулей, с помощью которых можно достаточно легко собрать различные устройства, в т.ч. не тривиальные.
Остальное тезисно:
От Raffi Krikorian (Engineering lead, Uber Advanced Technologies Center; former VP of Platform Engineering, Twitter) - "Don't be afraid to reinvent the wheel".
В ответ на вопрос модератора "что вы делаете, когда хочется всё бросить" ответ участника сессии - "If you are going through hell - keep going".
Выступал Ara Knaian, участвовавший в разработке проекта Project Ara (модульный смартфон) и собрал овации на видео, где падает телефон, трескается экран, закадровый голос произносит "oh, shi..", а после этого руки за пару секунд меняют модуль разбитого экрана на новый модуль :)
Еще важного для себя отметил, что директору нужно направлять работников и их мотивировать, а не заниматься микроменеджментом.
С сессии "How to make community" запомнилось выступление Ohad Meyuhas из Fab Lab Israel, расположенного в неблагополучном районе, где фаблаб буквально единственных выход в интернет и место, где иногда говорят по-английски. Фаблабы это в первую очередь социальный (а не технологический) проект и в этой связи аудиторию (и меня лично) тронул пример приведенный Ohad'ом. Он рассказал про мальчика, которого пинали на улице сверстники и старшие ребята, его Ohad привлек в фаблаб, мальчик обучился работе на оборудовании, начал творить, помогать ребятам по Fab Academy, после чего (внезапно для Ohad'a) сделал электроскутер. На вопрос о том "как это у тебя получилось?" мальчик ответил - "вы же сказали мне, что я могу сделать всё что угодно - я захотел сделать электроскутер и сделал его из хлама". Этот парень стал "самым крутым на районе" и начал проводить экскурсии в фаблабе для других ребят.
"Communicate with your neighbors, impact your neighbors… and they impact their neighbors."
Очень личным и интересным выступлением также был рассказ руководительницы Fab Foundation Sherry Lassiter. Она рассказала как стала тем, кем стала. Sherry "накрыл" кризис среднего возраста, она устала от своей бумажной работы,.. как-то раз сидя на кухне она прочитала в газете (sic!), что Центр битов и атомов MIT ищет program manager'a. Ей стало совершенно непонятно, о чем идет речь, но в то же время объявление очень заинтересовало. Конец истории вы уже знаете. Если говорить неформально Нил Гершенфельд - мозг движения фаблабов, а Lass - сердце этого движения.
В перерыве между сессиями был Fabercise (разминка) от Frosti. Как всегда эпично! Видео в моих видеозаписях.
После окончания сессий было вручение наград по FAB AWARDS. Всего было подано 66 проектов и первое место получил проект EMOsilla, посвященный созданию детьми уникальных стульев с их эмоциями (https://www.fablabs.io/projects/63). Приз за первое место - 3000$ + Ultimaker + Roland SRM-20 (получается минифаблаб). Я же говорил - подавайте свои проекты!
Российские мейкеры - не пропустите следующий раз :P
Еще раз было анонсировано, что следующая FAB-конференция будет проводиться в Китае в городе Shenzhen. Надеюсь доведется увидеть, насколько это действительно "city of makers". Где будет проходить FAB13 пока не анонсировали, но почти наверняка - в Южной или Центральной Америке.
Официальную программу завершил выход на сцену всех выпускников Fab Academy 2015 и мы заодно сделали фото с Sherry Lassiter.
На обратном пути наконец-то представилась хорошая возможность прогуляться по центру Бостона. По пути встретили немало красивых сооружений, фонтанов с возможностью их посещения (вода бьет фактически из плитки - ВДВшникам, наверное, понравилось бы), несколько активностей для прохожих. Из необычного - в парке был организован бесплатный музыкальный фестиваль, организаторы которого сдавали в аренду стулья, раскладушки и пледы - интересная модель монетизации :) Еще повеселили афроамериканцы, танцующие с людьми из толпы. Лучше один раз увидеть...

Вечер завершился поеданием арбуза в компании Hyun Park, основавшего Fab Lab Seoul. Оказывает он снял второй этаж в том же доме, где и мы сняли апартаменты!

А завтра нас ждет программа в MIT.

Notes on # FAB11. Day four. Symposium (http://www.fab11.org/how-to-make-symposium/).
At the beginning of the symposium, we were late, because Petersburg business did not let go and made a little mistake in navigation, having come to the wrong place.
Total - we missed the first session of “How To Make Design”, but we managed to do it in session:
* “How To Make Business”;
* “How To Make Tools”;
* “How to Make Research”;
* “How To Make Community”;
* “How to Make Education”.
I remember stories about creating your business from co-founder FormLab Maxim Lobovsky (SLA 3D printer) and the head of littleBits Ayah Bdeir. If everything is approximately clear with the printer (they started developing it even before the boom of home FDM printers), then littleBits should be paid special attention by looking at their website (littlebits.cc) and, possibly, taking part in their competition (http: // littlebits.cc/fab11). LittleBits is a constructor of modules magnetically attached to each other, with which you can quite easily assemble various devices, including not trivial.

In response to the moderator's question "what do you do when you want to quit everything" the answer of the session participant - "If you are going through hell - keep going".
The speaker was Ara Knaian, who participated in the development of the Project Ara (modular smartphone) and made a standing ovation on the video, where the phone falls, the screen cracks, the voice-over voice says “oh, shi ..”, and after that hands change the split-screen module to new module :)
He also noted that the director should direct employees and motivate them, and not engage in micromanagement.
From the session "How to make community" I remember the performance of Ohad Meyuhas from Fab Lab Israel, located in a disadvantaged area where the fab lab is literally the only internet connection and a place where English is sometimes spoken. Fab Labs is primarily a social (rather than technological) project and in this regard the audience (and me personally) was touched by the example given by Ohad. He told about a boy who was kicked off by peers and older guys on the street, Ohad got involved with the fab lab, the boy learned how to work on equipment, started creating and helping the guys at Fab Academy, then (suddenly for Ohad) he made an electric scooter. The question of "how did you do it?" the boy replied - "you told me that I can do anything — I wanted to make an electric scooter and made it out of the trash." This guy became "the coolest in the area" and began to conduct tours in the fab lab for other guys.

A very personal and interesting presentation was also a story told by the Fab Foundation director Sherry Lassiter. She told how she became what she became. Sherry "covered" the mid-life crisis, she was tired of her paperwork, .. once sitting in the kitchen she read in the newspaper (sic!) That the MIT Center for bits and atoms was looking for a program manager. She was completely incomprehensible what was going on, but at the same time the announcement was very interested. The end of the story you already know. Informally speaking, Neil Gershenfeld is the brain of the fab lab movement, and Lass is the heart of this movement.
Between sessions, there was a Fabercise (warm-up) from Frosti. As always epic! Video in my videos.
After the sessions, there was an awards ceremony for the FAB AWARDS. A total of 66 projects were submitted and the first place was given to the EMOsilla project, dedicated to the creation by children of unique chairs with their emotions (https://www.fablabs.io/projects/63). The prize for the first place is $ 3000 + Ultimaker + Roland SRM-20 (it turns out minifablab). I told you - submit your projects!
Russian makers - do not miss the next time: P
It was once again announced that the next FAB conference will be held in China in the city of Shenzhen. I hope to see how truly "city of makers" it is. Where FAB13 will be held has not yet been announced, but almost certainly in South or Central America.
The official program was completed on the stage of all graduates of Fab Academy 2015 and we also took photos with Sherry Lassiter.
On the way back, finally, there was a good opportunity to stroll through the center of Boston. On the way, we met a lot of beautiful buildings, fountains with the possibility of visiting them (the water hits from the tile in fact - VDVshnikov would probably like it), several activities for passersby. From the unusual - a free music festival was organized in the park, the organizers of which rented chairs, folding beds and blankets - an interesting model of monetization :) African Americans dancing with people from the crowd also made fun. It is better to see once ...
