Письмо запорожцев турецкому султану...
Прежде чем отправить войска на запорожскую Сечь, турецкий султан Мухаммад IV послал запорожцам требование покориться ему как владыке всего мира и наместнику Аллаха на земле.
Запорожцы ответили на это письмо своим знаменитым письмом, не стесняясь в выражениях, отрицая всякую доблесть султана и жестоко насмехаясь над кичливостью «непобедимого рыцаря». Известно несколько вариантов текста этого письма. Подлинность их вызывает сомнения, однако, по мнению исследователя запорожских казаков Д. И. Яворницкого, их содержание вполне согласно с духом запорожского казачества.
ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИЕ Мехмеда IV:
Я, султан и владыка Блистательной Порты, сын Ибрагима I, брат Солнца и Луны, внук и наместник Бога на земле, властелин царств Македонского, Вавилонского, Иерусалимского, Великого и Малого Египта, царь над царями, властитель над властелинами, несравненный рыцарь, никем не победимый воин, владетель древа жизни, неотступный хранитель гроба Иисуса Христа, попечитель самого Бога, надежда и утешитель мусульман, устрашитель и великий защитник христиан, повелеваю вам, запорожские казаки, сдаться мне добровольно и без всякого сопротивления и меня вашими нападениями не заставлять беспокоиться.

The Cossacks answered this letter with their famous letter, not embarrassed in their expressions, denying all the valor of the Sultan and cruelly mocking the arrogance of the “invincible knight”.
