"В 19:30 штаб 62-й армии отдал знаковый приказ №171 — всем частям армии перейти к жёсткой обороне и круглосуточно вести инженерные работы на занимаемых рубежах силами самих частей и гражданского населения, с использованием любых подручных материалов. Распоряжением политотдела армии все политработники обязаны были находиться в передовых траншеях. Вновь 62-я армия оказалась на грани катастрофы, и в приказе появились такие кричащие строки:
«Разъяснить всему личному составу, что армия дерётся на последнем рубеже, отходить дальше нельзя и некуда. Долг каждого бойца и командира до конца защищать свой окоп и свою позицию — НИ ШАГУ НАЗАД. Враг ДОЛЖЕН БЫТЬ УНИЧТОЖЕН, ВО ЧТО БЫ ТО НИ СТАЛО. Бойцов и командиров, самовольно оставляющих свои окопы и позиции, расстреливать на месте как изменников и предателей РОДИНЫ»."
