Старинный языческий праздник, как и положено, был окутан мистикой и ожиданием всевозможных чудес: солнце замедляло ход, на земле образовывались волшебные проходы, сквозь которые можно было посмотреть на другой край света, а то и на потусторонний мир, и нужно-то всего для этого в полдень заплести в косу крепкие березовые ветки и взглянуть сквозь них с крутого берега реки. Днём принято было набивать матрацы свежей и высушенной травой, устраивать ярмарки, ходить в гости к родне, а по вечерам жгли костры, водили хороводы, пили душистые чаи из собранных трав, пели, танцевали и веселились.
