Жители Сингапура дали своем городу множество разных прозвищ, среди которых и сокращенное S’pore, и величественное Lion City: «город льва». Впрочем, второе название — это даже не прозвище, а перевод названия с малайского: Singapura = singa (лев) + pura (город).
По легенде, столь горделивое название Сингапур получил от малайского принца Санга Нила Утамы, который в 1299 году посещал южные территории своего царства и на одном из островов увидел выступающего из джунглей льва.
