Когда раввином в Бердичеве был святой р. Леви-Ицхак, скончался там один зажиточный еврей, известный скряга. Погребальное братство потребовало у наследников большую сумму на похороны, но они отказались дать. В конце концов решили обратиться к р. Леви-Ицхаку и сделать так, как он скажет.
Когда рассказали цадику об этом деле, он очень разволновался, услышав недобрую весть о смерти того человека, и велел ничего не просить у наследников, ни копейки, а принять от них только то, что они дадут по свой воле. И еще он попросил известить его о времени похорон, потому что хотел сам принять в них участие.
Бердичевцам показалось это странным, однако приказания цадика выполнили полностью. А так как прошел по городу слух, что цадик собственной персоной примет участие в похоронах, пришли все жители города, и вышло, что похоронили покойника с большим почетом.
Когда вернулись жители города с похорон, спросили у цадика:
- Зачем нужны были такие почести для этого простеца и скряги?
Сказал им цадик:
- Этот человек трижды приходил ко мне на суд Торы, и все три раза оказывался правым, поэтому достоин он почестей.
И рассказал им цадик о трех делах, которые он судил по законам Торы.
Дело первое
Один человек занимался комиссионной торговлей вином: он брал деньги у лавочников своего местечка, ехал в большой город, покупал там вино и привозил им. Однажды случилось так, что, купив вино, хотел он заплатить, и вот - нет денег, была у него крупная сумма - и потерялась! Сдавленный крик вырвался у него из груди, и он упал без чувств. Стали его поднимать и приводить в чувство, но безуспешно. Тогда позвали врачей и они сказали, что до тех пор, пока не найдется потеря, его не вернуть к жизни, потому что, едва очнувшись, он видит, что денег у него нет, и снова теряет сознание. Случилось так, что покойный, которого мы похоронили сегодня, был тогда в этом городе. Посмотрел он на переполох и суматоху вокруг бесчувственного торговца, и заявил, что он нашел потерянные деньги. Торговец очнулся от этих слов, и тот немедленно вручил ему всю сумму.
Однако в действительности деньги нашел совершенно другой человек, а покойный ничего не находил. Как же так? А так: он увидел, что жизнь потерявшего сознание зависит от денег, и решил спасти его, и поэтому сказал, что нашел деньги, а на самом деле заплатил из собственного кармана.
А среди людей, собравшихся поглазеть на это происшествие, был один человек, который действительно нашел деньги, и возобладало в нем желание утаить найденное. Но с того момента, как увидел он поступок этого странного человека, который отдал столько собственных денег, да еще сказал всем, что именно он нашел потерю, угрызения совести стали мучить его. Постепенно росло это чувство, и по прошествии времени стал он сожалеть о содеянном, и не было ему покоя, пока не решил он вернуть тому бердичевцу его деньги. Поехал этот человек в Бердичев, пришел к нашему покойному и рассказал ему, что деньги нашел он и, поскольку тот заплатил из собственного кармана, он хочет сейчас же вернуть ему всю эту сумму.
А покойный отказывается брать! "Твои претензии не обоснованы, - говорит - Всевышний дал мне случай выполнить заповедь спасения жизни, и я не откажусь от нее". В конце концов согласились они решить дело в суде, пришли ко мне и изложили свои доводы. Один говорит: я нашел, я и должен заплатить; другой говорит: ты должен был заплатить в свое время пострадавшему, а я вовсе не обязан брать у тебя.
И суд Торы признал правоту покойного, и постановил, что нет на нем обязанности брать деньги против желания.

When the rabbi in Berdichev was a holy river. Levi-Yitzhak, a well-to-do Jew died there, a famous miser. The funeral brotherhood demanded a large sum from the heirs for the funeral, but they refused to give. In the end, they decided to turn to p. Levi-Yitzhak and do as he says.
When they told the tzaddik about this case, he was very excited when he heard the bad news about the death of that person, and ordered not to ask the heirs, not a penny, but to accept from them only what they would give of their own free will. It seemed strange to the Berdichevites, but the orders of the tzaddik were completely complied with. And since the rumor went around the city that the tzaddik would personally take part in the funeral, all the inhabitants of the city came, and it turned out that they buried the dead man with great honor.
When the inhabitants of the city returned from the funeral, they asked the tzaddik:
“Why were such honors needed for this simpleton and miser?”
The tzaddik told them:
“This man came to my Torah court three times, and turned out to be right three times, therefore he is worthy of honors.”
And the tzaddik told them about three cases that he judged according to the laws of the Torah.
First thing
One person was engaged in commission trading in wine: he took money from the shopkeepers of his place, went to a big city, bought wine there and brought them. Once it happened that, having bought wine, he wanted to pay, and now - there was no money, he had a large sum - and was lost! A stifled scream escaped from his chest, and he fell unconscious. They began to lift it and bring it to life, but to no avail. Then doctors were called and they said that until there was a loss, he could not be brought back to life, because, having barely regained consciousness, he saw that he had no money and again lost consciousness. It so happened that the deceased, whom we buried today, was then in this city. He looked at the commotion and turmoil around the insensitive merchant, and stated that he had found the lost money. The merchant woke up from these words, and he immediately handed him the full amount.
However, in reality, a completely different person found the money, and the deceased did not find anything. How so? And so: he saw that the life of the unconscious depends on money, and decided to save it, and therefore said that he had found the money, but actually paid from his own pocket.
And among the people who were going to stare at this incident, there was one person who really found the money, and the desire to conceal what was found prevailed in him. But from the moment he saw the act of this strange man who gave so much of his own money, and even told everyone that it was he who had found the loss, remorse began to torment him. This feeling gradually grew, and over time, he began to regret what he had done, and there was no rest for him until he decided to return his money to the Berdichevite. This man went to Berdichev, came to our deceased and told him that he had found the money, and since he paid out of his own pocket, he wants to immediately return the whole amount to him.
And the deceased refuses to take! "Your claims are not justified," says the Almighty gave me a chance to fulfill the commandment to save life, and I will not refuse it.
