СЯУ, что классное слово "mammoth" английский язык заимствовал из русского! Мамонт! Откуда у нас оно взялось, при этом, неясно: то ли сами придумали, то ли у народов севера какие-то слова на переработку взяли. В общем, единого мнения нет. Зато есть устаревший вариант этого слова - "мамут", который наконец объясняет мне, почему в английском слове нет "н". Откуда, впрочем, взялась "н" в более современном русском слове, по-прежнему остаётся непонятным.
