Одна из моих любимых историй - "притча об индейке". Мама учила молодую американку перед запеканием индейки обязательно обрезать у нее гузку. Когда девушка спросила у мамы, зачем это нужно, мама объяснила, что так всегда делала бабушка, а значит - так лучше. Но девушка оказалась любознательной и отправилась с тем же вопросом к самой бабушке. Та, услышав о чём идет речь, рассмеялась и объяснила, что в свое время у них дома просто был маленький противень...

Другая прекрасная история - опыт с пятью шимпанзе и лестницей, ведущей к связке бананов. Обезьян запускали в клетку, в которой стояла лестница, ведущая к бананам, но как только одна из них бралась за лестницу - всех обезьян поливали холодной водой. В итоге, как только одно животное пыталось приблизиться к лестнице, остальные его атаковали. Когда одну из мокрых обезьян заменили "посторонней" и она попыталась добраться до бананов, остальные приматы ее отогнали, помня о неприятных последствиях. В конце концов в клетке по одной заменили всех обезьян, и никто их холодной водой больше не обливал. Однако шимпанзе усвоили ритуал: к лестнице не приближались и не давали это делать другим.

Люди любят рассуждать о верности традициям и обычаям, так как в них хранится опыт предков. И в какой-то степени это верно. Но время от времени их стоит "перепроверять", иначе есть риск того, что вы в один прекрасный момент начнете тратить свои силы и время на бесполезные, утратившие свою актуальность вещи.

У людей есть голова на плечах именно для того, чтобы проводить анализ и устанавливать причинно-следственные связи. Если вас кто-то пытается принудить к чему-то бессмысленному - разберитесь, возможно, вы оказались на месте девушки, которой мама рекомендовала отрезать гузку у индейки. А если все вокруг избегают какого-то разумного действия и удерживают вас от него - не исключено, что окружающие ведут себя как шимпанзе в известном опыте. И уподобляться им просто смешно, правда? Способность мыслить самостоятельно - это просто бесценный дар. Пользуйтесь им.

Another beautiful story is an experience with five chimpanzees and a ladder leading to a bunch of bananas. The monkeys were launched into the cage, in which there was a staircase leading to the bananas, but as soon as one of them took the stairs, all the monkeys were watered with cold water. As a result, as soon as one animal tried to approach the stairs, the rest attacked him. When one of the wet monkeys was replaced by an “outsider” and she tried to get to the bananas, the other primates drove her away, remembering the unpleasant consequences. In the end, all the monkeys were replaced one at a time in the cage, and no one poured cold water on them anymore. However, the chimpanzees learned the ritual: they didn’t approach the stairs and didn’t let others do it.

People like to talk about loyalty to traditions and customs, as they store the experience of their ancestors. And to some extent this is true. But from time to time they should be "double-checked", otherwise there is a risk that at one fine moment you will begin to spend your energy and time on useless things that have lost their relevance.

People have a head on their shoulders precisely in order to conduct analysis and establish causal relationships. If someone is trying to force you into something meaningless - sort it out, you may be in the place of a girl whom my mother recommended cutting off the turkey’s tail. And if everyone around avoids some rational action and keeps you from it - it is possible that those around behave like a chimpanzee in a known experience. And being like them is just ridiculous, right? The ability to think independently is simply an invaluable gift. Use it.
