В 1921 году к известному художнику Кустодиеву, который в то время писал Шаляпина, заявилась парочка молодых ученых с просьбой написать их портрет. Одному было 27, второму — 25. Они пообещали мастеру две вещи: что станут знаменитыми и что щедро оплатят его работу — принесут мешок муки. Муку находчивые молодые люди заработали, починив что-то на мельнице. Кустодиев не смог отказаться от дефицитного товара. А героям картины пришлось держать слово до конца.
В 1956-м Нобелевскую премию по химии получит изображенный справа Николай Семенов, а в 1978-м ту же премию, но по физике — Петр Капица (на картине слева).
Петр Капица смолоду подавал большие надежды и был уверен, что станет знаменитым физиком. Так что вместе с другом Николаем Семеновым решил уговорить художника Кустодиева написать их портрет. Маэстро, задернув портрет Шаляпина, на это вздохнул: «Впервые в жизни рисую никому не известных, но очень упорных молодых людей».
