Как стать чемпионом? — это вопрос, равный вопросу: как достать лавровый венок? Что такое чемпион? — это уже вопрос с мыслью о жизни. И удерживает болельщика на трибуне не только арифметика достижений, а именно та неотчетливая мысль, что есть тайна, есть логика, почти математическая непреложность этого зрелища, и понять ее — словно постигнуть некую отвлеченную формулу жизни. Есть правила игры (условия задачи), объективные и всех выравнивающие, — это старт. Есть соревнования, действие (процесс решения). И есть финиш, лавры (результат). Смотришь, болеешь: вот-вот что-то поймешь!.. — и опять ускользнуло. Спорт- абстракция человеческих усилий и достижений, мысль о жизни, разыгранная в мускулах и секундах, зрелище без обмана, где сама напряженность борьбы сняла все лишнее и недостоверное, стал необыкновенно популярен именно потому, что очень уж ясны условия задачи, очень понятен старт. В этом секрет его народности: и академик и герой, и мореплаватель и плотник ощутят в нем модели мира и испытают волнение предвосхищения и узнавания и азарт справедливости. К тому же спорт демократичен: словно сам стадион выдвинул участников из своей среды, таких же, как мы… Но не таких! Зрелище спорта отнюдь не примитивно — оно поучительно, познавательно. Иначе бы не смотрели.

This is the secret of his nationality: both the academician and the hero, the navigator and the carpenter will feel in it the models of the world and experience the excitement of anticipation and recognition and the excitement of justice. In addition, the sport is democratic: as if the stadium itself has nominated participants from its midst, just like us ... But not those! The spectacle of sport is not at all primitive - it is instructive, informative. Otherwise they would not have looked.
