...Но и опасность неумолимо приближалась, и уже не только Матье, но и заговоренные лошади почуяли приближение опасности. Кони стали вырываться, тянуть поводья и явно нервниачать. Градджи появились неожиданно и страшно – из-за ближайшего холма.
Градджи – это крылатые великаны, ростом в 2-3 человеческих роста, шумные и стремительные. О них ходят легенды. Фаро читал про них не раз, но воочию наблюдал впервые. На его веку, наполненном чудесами и опасностями, сложностями и страхами, было немало, однако он был уверен, что отец прогнал последних Градджи далеко из земель Замка. По всей видимости, они вернулись.
- Теперь очередь за Драконами появиться, - внезапно вслух произнес Фаро. Матье, никак не ожидавший такого поворота, но слышавший каждое слово Владыки, от удивления чуть не упал на землю.
Об этом они с Мари никому не рассказывали. В тот самый первый день, когда они вдвоем убежали в горы, и им было хорошо друг с другом, Матье сильно напугал девушку, превратившись внезапно в Кофейного Дракона. То, что это именно Кофейный Дракон, Матье выяснил позже, прочтя об этом в книге заезжих лицедеев. А тогда им показалось, что это огромный и страшный четырехметровый ящер с огромными крыльями. Матье-Дракон видел себя в отражении в озере… На гербе Замка красовался Огненный Дракон. Матье очнулся в своем теле, и, так как никакого объяснения этому они с Мари не знали, они решили молчать.
Но, похоже, день настал.
- Владыка, я однажды превратился в Кофейного Дракона, - дрожащим голосом сообщил Матье, - но я не знаю, как это получилось
- Как это сделать, я знаю, но правду ли ты говоришь мне, юноша? – Фаро отреагировал мгновенно, несмотря на то, что это казалось практически невозможным. – Я могу произнести заговор, и, если он сработает, ты нападешь сначала на Градджи, а затем освободишь людей из шахты, - с жтими словамИ, чтобы не терять зря времени, Фаро начал заговор.
Дальше… А дальше Матье превратился в Дракона, быстро и безболезненно, словно это было привычным делом. Мощный инстинкт поднял его с земли, распахнув крылья навстречу ветру, и погнал на Градджи. Те, видимо, не ожидавшие такого поворота, стали что-то кричать на своем тарабарском языке, а после первой вспышки огня обратились в бегство.
Огонь тоже оказался для Матье-Дракона чем-то самим собой разумеющимся. Он просто ЗНАЛ, как это сделать. Не раздумывая ни секунды.
Все те же скрытые инстинкты ящера подсказывали лететь за Градджи, жарить и убивать. Но в мозгу прочно засела мысль: «Шахта!» Матье-Дракон повернул назад. Очень быстро разбросал камни около входа.
И снова отключился. Очнулся он на земле, а около него сидела заплаканная, но совершенно живая Мари. Фаро находился недалеко, но пробуждения героя не заметил
- Матье, Матье, что же теперь будет, - тихо и со слезами спросила Мари. Матье попробовал встать. Ничего не вышло, однако это движение заметил Фаро и подошел
- Что ж, наш герой оказался с изюминкой, - проговорил он, - и показал свою пригодность к жизни в Замке. И даже более, показал свою необходимость там… Что ж, собирайся, поехали в Замок!
Мари сжала руку Матье в их тайном жесте – «не упусти важного», и
юноша понял без слов.
- Владыка Фаро, позволишь ли ты мне взять с собой мою нареченную, Мари? Без нее свет мне не мил, а ты предлагаешь мне долгую службу
- Позволю, все равно ж без нее никак, - легко уступил Фаро, и вскоре Матье уже въезжал в ворота Замка полноправным приближенным Владыки.
Как позже узнал Матье, поля и посевы Гадджи уничтожили только ближние, все дальние остались в целости, как и погреб, откуда Матье добыл первые припасы, позволившие ему добраться до Замка. Жителей За Той деревни на время приютили жители Той, обещали помощь со строительством и укреплением новой деревни. Однако для Матье дом был навсегда потерян, а впереди его ждала совсем другая жизнь. Из старой он взял с собой только самое дорогое – его Мари
