Интересно, многие ли из вас слышали, что в Среду, 8 Июня 2011 г., прошёл так называемый "Всемирный день IPv6"?
В этот день крупнейшие сайты мира (Google, Yahoo, FaceBook, Яндекс и др.) тестировали возможность обращаться к ним по новым Интернет-адресам. Акция, прежде всего, была предназначена для Интернет-провайдеров. Проверялось, есть ли у них современное оборудование, способное поддерживать оба типа Интернет-адреса (старый IPv4 и новый - IPv6), как быстро и эффективно они могут переключить своих пользователей на новые адреса, выдержат ли параллельную нагрузку сами сайты и т.п.
Вкратце предыстория "праздника" такова. Где-то в Феврале этого года в Интернете закончили распродавать IP-адреса старого типа (IPv4). Именно они лежали в основе построения всей сети Интернет! Конечно, далеко не все из купленных тогда IP-адресов сейчас реально заняты - но прогнозируется, что к осени уже все старые адреса в Сети будут забиты.
Причина забитости старых адресов понятна. Когда Интернет только создавался, компьютеров было мало. Теперь в качестве Интернет-пользователей выступают не только настольные компьютеры, но и ноутбуки, коммуникаторы, КПК, сотовые телефоны, смартфоны, веб-камеры и т.п. И каждому из этих устройств в идеале нужен свой независимый IP-адрес в Интернете.
Пока проблему нехватки адресов решают так. Несколько пользователей одного провайдера (в случае, если они не покупали себе выделенный адрес) выходят в Сеть под одним и тем же внешним IP-адресом (который, к тому же, может меняться, в зависимости от нагрузки). Это приводит к неудобствам: например, когда невозможно одновременно качать файлы с одного сайта-файлообменника (один ждёт, когда канал связи освободит другой пользователь), не говоря уже про работу в торрент-сетях.
Решить эту проблему должны адреса нового типа (IPv6). Они были придуманы в 90-ые годы. По сути, структура адреса почти такая же, просто диапазон адресов расширен в 2^96 раз! Это гарантирует тот факт, что в ближайшем будущем их хватит на все мыслимые устройства любого жителя планеты с лихвой. :-)
Одна проблема - большинство оборудования в Сети всё ещё поддерживает только старый тип адреса. Оно постепенно заменяется на новое - но ещё не было возможности синхронно проверить работу новой системы адресации! И тогда группа сайтов, входящих в так называемое "Общество Интернета" (Internet Society), решило выделить для этого единый день.

P.S. Интересно, а как у вас прошёл "Всемирный день IPv6". Я слышал, что у некоторых провайдеров были проблемы с Wi-Fi роутерами. Также не работал Skype (хотя про него вообще отдельные новости).
Так как переход на IPv6 неизбежен, я рекомендую вам уже сейчас проверить возможность вашей операционной системы и оборудования для поддержки этого сетевого протокола.
P.P.S. Если всё, что я написал, вы смогли увидеть, значит "Всемирный день IPv6" для Контакта, LiveJournal, FaceBook или Твиттера прошёл благополучно. :-)

I wonder how many of you have heard that the so-called “World IPv6 Day” took place on Wednesday, June 8, 2011?

Briefly, the background of the "holiday" is as follows. Somewhere in February of this year, the Internet finished selling IP addresses of the old type (IPv4). They were the basis for building the entire Internet! Of course, not all of the IP addresses purchased at that time are now really busy - but it is predicted that by the fall all the old addresses on the Web will be full.
The reason for the clogging of old addresses is clear. When the Internet was just being created, there were few computers. Now Internet users are not only desktop computers, but also laptops, communicators, PDAs, cell phones, smartphones, webcams, etc. And each of these devices ideally needs its own independent IP address on the Internet.
So far, the problem of lack of addresses has been solved this way. Several users of the same provider (in case they did not buy a dedicated address) access the Network under the same external IP address (which, moreover, can vary, depending on the load). This leads to inconvenience: for example, when it is impossible to simultaneously download files from one file hosting site (one is waiting for the other user to release the communication channel), not to mention working in torrent networks.
The new type of address (IPv6) should solve this problem. They were invented in the 90s. In fact, the address structure is almost the same, just the range of addresses is expanded 2 ^ 96 times! This guarantees the fact that in the near future they will be enough for all conceivable devices of any inhabitant of the planet with interest. :-)
One problem - most equipment on the Web still only supports the old type of address. It is gradually being replaced by a new one - but there was still no opportunity to synchronously check the operation of the new addressing system! And then a group of sites included in the so-called "Internet Society" (Internet Society), decided to allocate a single day for this.

P.S. I wonder how you got the "World IPv6 Day". I heard that some providers had problems with Wi-Fi routers. Skype also did not work (although some news about it in general).
