В процессе общения с systemd я отказался и от перехода на grub2. Почему-то с ним не работают параметры ядра вроде vga=0x3d4, которые отлично работают с "первым" grub. Пытался вкуривать маны, но достаточно быстро решил, что игра не стоит свеч.
Особенно доставило это описание:

This is perfectly possible, feasible and works just fine with GRUB LEGACY. It even works with GRUB4DOS! This could be used as workaround.
