Futurism was an international art movement founded in Italy in 1909. It was a refreshing contrast to the tearful sentimentalism of Romanticism. The Futurists loved speed, noise, machines, pollution, and cities. Futurists embraced the exciting new world that was then upon them rather than hypocritically enjoying the modern world’s comforts while loudly denouncing the forces that made them possible. Futurism was a kind of rejection of the Past and advocated the modernization and cultural rejuvenation of Italy. Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti wrote the Manifesto in the autumn of 1908 and it first appeared as a preface to a volume of his poems, published in Milan in January 1909.
