Philip van Wilder, Fantasie (perhaps the only known original surviving solo lute piece by van Wilder)
Philip van Wilder (1500 - 1554) was a Franco-Flemish lutenist and composer (active in England). In the late 15th century, Erasmus Widmann, and others were bringing in the ‘new learning’ and royal palaces were starting to be decorated with classical motifs, the fashion for the lute was beginning to gain ground. Henry VIII received noted continental players such as Albert de Rippe at court, and counted the Flemish lutenist Philip van Wilder (the first English-resident player whose music has come down to us) as a personal friend, and set his children to play the lute.
