John Johnson (1545 – 1594) was an English lutenist and composer. He was attached to the court of Queen Elizabeth I. He was the father of the lutenist and composer Robert Johnson (1583 - 1633). He wrote pavanes, galliards, and ground-based pieces, and also some very tuneful variation sets on popular tunes. His duets are very notable. The hallmark of his treble-and-ground writing is that they (duets) run the whole gamut of the instrument, so they are good student material.
