Thomas Robinson, "Robinsons May"
Thomas Robinson (1560 - 1609) was an English Renaissance composer and music teacher, who flourished around 1600. He taught and wrote music for lute, cittern, orpharion, bandora, viol, and singing. His solo works (about 23) were collected in his "Schoole of Musicke"(1603), where also we can find some lovely duets. As the title suggests, there are some study pieces for the novice here, though not all are beginner’s fare. His music has a wonderfully lyrical character. In the introduction to "Schoole of Musicke", he castigates the labored, mechanical, variation style of the preceding generation of composers.
